The Founder

Whitney Mulhern

Bio

Whitney Mulhern is the founder of FindYourGroove. She has been dancing since she was three and grew up competing at the state and national level. At NYU, she earned dual degrees in computer science and computer engineering while performing in a dance company and a theater group. She is now a software engineer and has worked at both startups and Fortune 500 companies. She lives in New York City, where she still takes class.

• Age 3: Started dancing
• Age 14: Fractured her spine. Wore a full torso brace for nine months. Sat in every dance class for six months watching and taking notes before she could participate again. Months of physical therapy to return.
• High school: Dancing 20–25 hours per week. Placed top at a regional competition, competed at the 2012 nationals (top 100).
• NYU: Chose computer science over transferring to Tisch to study dance — because you can study CS and still dance, but not the other way around. Dual degree in computer science and computer engineering. Dance company (Tisch's Pulse Dance Project) and theater company (Tisch New Theater) throughout.
• Post-college: Stopped dancing for five years but watched peers she'd trained alongside become professional dancers.
• Return to dance: Came back recreationally — for the love of it. Reconnected with the community and heard the same frustrations repeatedly: dancers couldn't find classes, teachers couldn't reach new students, schedules were frustrating to navigate, and there were no real tools built for either side.
• 2025: Founded FindYourGroove.

Industry Context

Industry Background

Dance is a multi-billion dollar industry running on Instagram DMs and word of mouth. We’re building the infrastructure it never had.

• How dancers find classes today: By checking each studio's website individually (most run on Mindbody, a platform built for gyms and spas), and by following teachers on Instagram for schedule changes, substitutions, and pop-up classes. Instagram Stories disappear in 24 hours and are only visible to existing followers.
• The discovery problem: A dancer looking for a specific teacher has to figure out which studios that teacher works at. A dancer looking for a class that fits their schedule and style has to scan each studio one by one. New teachers' Instagrams are structurally invisible — their posts only reach people who already follow them.
• The teacher problem: Many teachers work across multiple studios. They rely on Instagram to direct students to wherever they're teaching that week or chatting with students after class — but promoting a class at one studio while standing in another studio feels uncomfortable. There is no neutral place for a teacher to list all of their classes in one view. Independent teachers hosting their own classes currently piece together Eventbrite (discovery), Partiful (invites), and Venmo (payment) to run a single session and can only advertise on Insta.
• No cross-studio data exists. There is no way to search across studios, compare schedules, or track class history. Dancers have no training record. Teachers have no way to see their audience across venues.
• Mindbody was not designed for dance. Mindbody is the industry standard for dance studio class scheduling and mantainance but it was built for gyms, spas, and fitness centers. It doesn't model drop-in classes, rotating guest teachers, or style-based discovery.
• ClassPass origin: In 2012, dancer Payal Kadakia founded Classtivity after failing to find a ballet class in NYC. It pivoted to a fitness subscription model, rebranded as ClassPass, raised over $500M, and merged (via Mindbody) with EGYM in 2026 for $7.5B. ClassPass does not offer dance-specific discovery.
• Private equity is entering the dance industry. DanceOne (TZP Group, 2023), described as the largest institutional investment in dance, runs 500+ events and works with 10,000+ studios. Ensemble Performing Arts operates 130+ locations, acquires 1–2 schools per month, and in 2026 acquired Broadway Dance Center — one of the most iconic drop-in studios in NYC. Capezio was acquired by Argand Partners in 2025. Dance Media was acquired by PE in May 2026.
